Caring for your jewellery
Gold and platinum forgive a lot; stones forgive less. A few habits will keep a piece looking new.
Every day
- Put jewellery on last — after cream, perfume and hairspray.
- Take it off for sport, cleaning, the pool and the sea: chlorine and salt harm both metal and stone.
- Store pieces apart: a diamond scratches everything, including another diamond.
Cleaning at home
Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush. Rinse, blot with a lint-free cloth and let it dry.
What not to do
- Ultrasonic baths: never for emeralds, for rubies with fissures or for any treated stone.
- Steam cleaners and harsh chemicals — no as well.
- Do not pull a ring off by its stone: it loosens the setting.
Emeralds in particular
Emeralds are traditionally treated with oil. Hot water, solvents and ultrasound wash it out and the fissures become visible. Cool water and a soft brush only.
Once a year
Show the piece to a jeweller: prongs and clasps get checked, metal polished and the rhodium plating of white gold renewed when needed. Write to us and we will tell you what your piece needs.
